Sites

Brief outline of some of the sites that the diggers portrayed in this project where working at. The range of sites has so far been somewhat limited but I hope to expand this in future if anybody would care to invite me photograph their site or workplace I would only be to happy to include them within this project if feasible. - Battlesbury Camp : Excavation of MOD land adjacent to Battlesbury Camp hill fort. Work carried out by large contract unit based in the South West. Accommodation not required work force locally based - 90mins travel time per day with normal working week.
- Birckbeck College : Evening class course in field Archaeology organized by UCL - full course to diploma level could take four years. Field work required part of course -
- Bishops Cleeve : Excavation of multi period site prior to construction of new supermarket. Work carried out by large contract unit based in the South West. Accommodation in holiday cottages (some shared rooms) and local college halls of residence. 30mins travel per day plus four hours travel to and from contract firms base of operation per week with normal working week.
- British Museum : Excavations carried out at various locations East Yorkshire, Norfolk and Hertfordshire. Dig teams comprised of paid staff and volunteers in East Yorkshire with other digs made up of paid staff with some assistance from local units on occasions. Accommodation in Yorkshire was Tents or Local pubs, in Norfolk holiday caravans or hotel whilst Hertfordshire all accommodation was locally based although some members of team commuted from west london.
- Boxgrove : Research excavation of Palaeolithic site taking place over several seasons (some work is still ongoing) . Accommodation Tents and shared barn. Dig teams comprised of paid supervisory staff students and volunteers
- Dunragit : Research excavation by Southampton and Manchester university of Neolithic henge site taking place over several season. Accommodation Tents. Dig teams comprised of paid supervisory staff students and volunteers
- Greenwich : Time team excavation with assistance from students from Birckbeck college and other volunteers.
- Huntsmans Quarry : Rescue excavation of extensive Iron age - Roman site carried out by foreign students and volunteers prior to destruction of site by quarrying. Accommodation camping in quarry or local pub grounds no pay but food provided.
- Newbury Wharf : Excavation of land adjacent to canal at Newbury (Post Med features) . Work carried out by large contract unit based in the South West. Accommodation not required work force locally based 2hrs travel time per day with normal working week.
- Rock Common : Excavation of mesolithic site prior to reuse of land as landfill site. Work carried out by large contract unit based in the South West. Accommodation provided in nearby university halls of residence. 30mins travel time per day plus six hours travel to and from contract firms base of operation per week with normal working week.
- Tolpuddle Bypass: Excavation of Roman Cemetery . Work carried out by large contract unit based in the South West. Accommodation not required work force locally based 2hrs travel time per day with normal working week.
- Westhampnett : Excavation of Bronze-age Cremation Cemetery . Work carried out by large contract unit based in the South West. Accommodation not required work force commuting some locally based others up to 3hrs travel time per day with normal working week.
